NEWSLETTER  OCTOBER 2007

FAIRFORD HOSPITAL.  Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trust has been running outpatient clinics at Fairford Hospital for over 12 months now. Both type of clinic and patient numbers have grown consistently during 2007. We must keep this up and current clinics are set out below so if you have not already done so why not ask your Doctor if you can be referred to a clinic in Fairford.

OPTION 4 (possible new build)

Following Gloucestershire PCT’s decision not to support the provision of inpatient beds in a new medical facility in Fairford Option 4 is not now proceeding, at least in the form originally envisaged. Whilst the League is extremely disappointed at the turn of events we remain positive and dedicated to the provision of new and improved health care facilities for this area.

The Management Committee met recently under the Chairmanship of an independent facilitator to discuss and agree an action plan for the future. We will provide an update in our next Newsletter in the spring.

FRIENDS IN THE COMMUNITY

The League has continued to operate within the Community and our Friends in the Community activities remain a major part of our work. In fact we spend between £40,000 and £50,000 per year providing the following services.

 HOME NURSING

PHYSIOTHERAPY
Some people wish to stay in their own homes when they are very ill, with close family or friends to look after them, helped by their G P and the District Nurse. If there is a need for extra nursing the League of Friends meets it. The arrangement with the Physiotherapy Dept. of the PCT to provide a service based at Fairford Hospital is working well. The League has just renewed the contract for a further period and we do keep the service under regular review.
COUNSELLING WELCOME HOME SCHEME
The League continues to provide financial support for counselling services through the Lechlade and Fairford Surgeries. Patients are asked to make a donation with the League providing the balance. The scheme aims to give initial support to patients recently discharged Scheme from hospital where there are no family members or neighbours able to help during the first few days.
VOLUNTEER CAR SERVICE PRESCRIPTION DELIVERY
The volunteer drivers continue to provide a much valued service to Car Service patients from the Fairford and Lechlade practices who have no means of travelling to the surgeries or hospitals for their appointments. Our thanks are due to Val Harvey for running the Scheme and to the volunteers. We continue to provide a free delivery service for patients in the outlying Delivery villages who find it difficult or impossible to get to chemists shops or the dispensary at Fairford Surgery.

EDNA DAWES BEQUEST

Lunch Club: The Lunch Club meets every Monday at Fairford Hospital and is now up to its maximum membership of 16.

Counselling: For almost 2 years we have provided additional finance for an existing counselling scheme at Farmor’s School. This makes a difference to the lives of individuals and supports students with a wide range of problems.

First Responders: This is a scheme to train volunteers to attend life threatening medical emergencies and give help to patients before an ambulance arrives. We now have a very strong team in place which has been very effective.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - CAN YOU HELP?
We are always looking for volunteers to support Friends in the Community and the Edna Dawes Lunch Club. We also need more collectors for the House to House collection next year. Perhaps inevitably as some of our volunteers have been helping for many years they are seeking to retire or reduce their commitments. Thus we are in urgent need of more and ideally younger volunteers to take their place. If you can spare time to assist in any capacity please contact Julie Zarczynski (details below)

THANK YOU
Very special thanks to Gail Bloxham for many years devoted service to the League. She resigned in September and is hoping to move to France fairly soon. Welcome to Julie Zarczynski her successor. A very big thank you to all the Friends without whose generosity and help we would not be able to provide the support to Fairford Hospital and the local communities around Fairford and Lechlade.
