Fairford Swan Aid

Swan rescue

Fairford Swan Aid was a small voluntary organisation dedicated to the welfare of swans in and around Fairford.
We rescued sick and injured swans with the aim of returning them to the wild as soon as they are well.
We operated between 1991 and 2020. WE HAVE NOW CLOSED.

We constantly monitored the swans in our area which covers the River Coln in Fairford and the surrounding villages like Bibury and Quenington, the River Thames at Lechlade, Buscot, Kelmscott and Kempsford and the numerous lakes in the eastern section of the Cotswold Water Park. By knowing the swans in our area we are often able to rescue them before their injuries become too debilitating. We also lobbied for a more swan friendly environment and succeeded in getting Southern Electric to put swan diverters on overhead cables at Fairford and Lechlade.

Fairford Swan Aid worked closely with other organisations like lock keepers, local angling clubs, the police and other swan rescue organisations.

We only had short term care facilities and so worked closely with South West Swan Sanctuary in Swindon which can provide specialist longer term care.

We submitted records of our rescues to the National Swan Convention, a group lobbying for environmental improvements for swans and other wildlife.
